Known for its plethora of cave systems, North Alabama has over 4,000 caves that have been discovered. Due to the number of caves known in the area, North Alabama is considered a spelunking paradise. With some caves dating back to prehistoric times and others being utilized as a mine to make gunpowder during the Civil War, the cave systems in the area are sure to spark your interest. The most well known cave is Cathedral Caverns, which offers guided tours. 2. Southern Cuisine

As a southern native, my opinions could be considered biased, however food in the south doesn’t compare to anywhere else I've traveled in the country. From biscuits and gravy, to tomato pie, the food here has more soul than some people I’ve encountered. Loaded with flavor, the dishes you will find in North Alabama are constantly a crowd pleaser you’ll crave for years to come. From fine dining to hole in the wall restaurants keep an eye out for biscuits and gravy, fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits, and barbecue with white sauce to give you a taste of what Alabama is known for.

4. Shopping

I like to call North Alabama the salvage capital of the south. From the only unclaimed baggage shopping center in the country, to the Amazon returns warehouse, if you are a bargain hunter, you’ll need to visit North Alabama asap. If you are renovating a home, redecorating, or an interior designer you’ll find the shopping in this area drool worthy, trust me. Besides thrifting at the local Good Will, here are a few favorite locations for shopping: Crazy Cazboy’s , Mikes Merchandise, Southeastern Salvage, Unclaimed Baggage.

6. Outdoor Recreation

Home to Lake Guntersville, this lake is a world class bass fishing destination that draws visitors from all over the world to fish these local waters. With the number of rivers in the area, some even find enjoyment in whitewater rafting and kayaking. If that isn’t your thing, theres a local charter that will take out out and teach you about the lakes history, they even have a lunch / dinner cruise occasionally. If being the captain of your very own vessel is what you seek, check out the boat rental options they have at Town Creek Fishing Center. Not a water baby? How about zooming through the tree tops at Screamin Eagle Aerial Park or galavanting on horseback with Alabama Horseback Adventures. Still not sold; how about vineyards, breweries and frozen cocktails? Levis on the Lake, Main Channel Brewery, CoOp Brewery, Jules J Berta Vineyard are a few of my favorite locations to enjoy a cold one.

7. Affordability / Accessibility

Alabama is actually one of the cheapest states in the country to live in, coming in at 1.1 times less expensive than the national average. Which is good news for all you vacationers looking for a new destination to visit. Visiting Alabama for your next vacation is sure to be cheaper than other destinations and the “small town” vibe is sure to create a relaxing atmosphere for you and your wallet.
